What You Should Know About Mud Mats & Protecting Your Lawn

Your well maintained and cared for lawn probably took a lot of work on your part. If the use of heavy machinery has started tearing up your lawn, it's time to protect it. Heavy equipment can reap a lot of havoc on your lawn and making it very difficult for grass to grow. In this article, we will go over how to protect your lawn using some simple steps.

Heavy machinery moves around on either treads or wheels and will easily destroy your yard after a few days. We are providing some important tips to protect your lawn from damage when you need to bring in heavy machinery for a project such as installing a pool.

You Must Have Dry Ground

Before allowing heavy equipment to travel over your yard, make sure the ground is dry. The ground will absorb the weight so damage is not left in its path.

If the ground is wet it's also soft, causing the equipment to sink and compact leaving deep ruts and gouges in the ground. If you or someone else will be operating heavy equipment on a regular basis, you should consider installing artificial turf instead of natural grass.

Apply A Tarp Over Exposed Areas

Place a tarp over the exposed areas that will be worked on. The tarp will create a protective barrier reducing the amount of time cleaning up after the machinery is gone. Even though this offers less protection than a mat or ground cover, it's easy to reuse and will be available when you need it.

The tarp will work as a layer that will take the full force of the equipment driven over it. If you choose to use a tarp, make sure there are no holes or tears in the fabric allowing dirt and debris to get underneath and damage your lawn.

The holes in the corners will allow you to tie it down so it will not move around. Make sure both ends reach down at least 2 feet from either side of the edge where work is being done. Otherwise, there could be an opening allowing material to fall onto areas that are out of bounds, especially if the area is muddy.

Stay away from using heavy machinery or equipment in wet conditions because it can increase the risk of slipping and falling caused by the build-up of mud when the ground becomes wetter. If you will be working on an area that's wet, let the area dry out before bringing in the equipment or machinery.

It's imperative not to damage turf that has been put down over barren soil usually found around new homes. This can lead to damaged grass roots and added costs for repairs.If you will need regular access to these areas, make sure you provide good protection using plywood sheets, mats, or something else. You want to stay away from potential long-term problems by taking precautions ahead of time.
