Our Access Matting is a heavy-duty HDPE composite mat that supports the heaviest loads over very tough terrain. These mats are made for high traffic work sites where heavy equipment will be used. They create strong, stable, and non-shifting work platforms or temporary access roads. The mats have overlapping flanges with an interlocking design and a secure connection system. They are semi-buoyoant, providing a reliable support for heavy equipment in muddy, swamp like conditions. The access matting has an estimated lifespan of 10+ years. It can be easily cleaned, stored and transported to numerous jobs.

For MegaDeck installations, the manufacturer recommends using 8 Megadeck pins per mat.

About Access Mating For Wetlands, Roads, and Waterways

Most construction workers realize the majority of road structures operate like barriers. The drainage systems must have ditches dug along the road with culverts and outer ditches. In drier areas with coarse-grained glacial moraine or sandy conditions the impact can be quite impressive but the impact of new drainage on wetlands can be important. The natural flow and direction of water must be taken into consideration when designing drainage systems.

When designing a new road, land surveys should be in place to identify the best alignment for a new route. A good approach for viewing the entire landscape is with aerial photos or airborne laser scanner mapping. This will help to deal with peat locations and the depths of peat for accurate conclusions. This information will be needed for assessing the environment and help in the preliminary geotechnical design. Some popular recommended methods include ground penetration and test holes.

Drainage layouts can be challenging when dealing with environmental restrictions but is a critical step to ensure the road is operating correctly. Due to constant traffic, roads can deteriorate very quickly if the drainage system is not installed properly. The most important part of the drainage system are the outlet ditches. Clogged or missing culverts will lead to big issues.

Natural ecosystems can be in harm's way if changes are made to roads installed over wetlands. In many cases, these sensitive areas are peat bogs. You will probably notice the area is suffering from dying or dead trees. Roads built over peat areas must be carefully thought out. Peat is an organic material that reacts very differently under road and traffic loads.

About Road Ditches

If your recent project involves rehabilitation or reconstruction of roads there will be surface water drainage and drainage structures already in place. Therefore, the impacts on the environment have already happened and only minor changes to the existing drainage system will be needed.

Keep in mind, that clearing ditches will take a certain level of excavation of soil and reused when possible. In many cases, the soil removed from the bottom of the ditches is often used for the road itself as well as landscaping. Special action could be taken to ensure the soil does not flow back into the ditch or end up in places where it can cause harm.

There will be some level of pollutants in ditches, therefore it's not a good idea to place the soil on a large through-flow of water. You should use solid ground such as glacial moraine areas as disposal spots.

Designing the drainage can take work especially if the road travels a long distance in a cut or through peatland. Keep in mind, peat bogs are pretty flat causing water to remain in place. An outlet drainage ditch may have to be quite long to reach a good watercourse along with machines to excavate that might hurt the terrain. There are limitations to the level of work that can be done to protect the wetlands. Surface water should be drained along the road to existing watercourses to prevent damage to the hydrology of the wetland.

Road Culverts

Culverts are important to expedite the flow of water through the road. The flow of water must be as wide as the demand of water flow. When designing new culverts or existing culverts it's important to focus on the environment. Land animals should easily pass over a road but frogs and fish might have problems. Culverts are not meant to serve as barriers to the migration of water animals.

If the culvert is like a stream crossing, the depth must be right for fish to swim through. Also, the culvert must be level with the surface of the stream. Also, there should not be a waterfall at the Access Matting.

Note – Access Matting is a platform to support equipment for construction such as drilling, helipads, rigs, and tanks. It also serves as a roadway for moving over unstable ground and pipelines.

In Conclusion

Good planning and well-designed drainage systems will allow roads can serve as barriers. In drier areas, the impact will be minimal but in wetlands, it can be quite significant. During the construction of a new road, the water flow must be studied for the alignment of the road. Drainage can be complicated to carry out but if not performed properly, the road can deteriorate very quickly.

The removal of soil can have a major impact on the final construction. The soil must be moved to a landfill preventing it from landing back in the ditches. Experienced workers dealing with road construction know all too well that surface water must be drained along existing roads to prevent damage to wetlands. Ditches, culverts, and water flow must be in place to protect the overall environment while protecting wildlife. Larger animals can move freely but smaller creatures such as fish will have difficulties moving forward.
