The Erosion Control Filter Sock is an ideal, commercial grade erosion control solution. The durable tubular mesh socks are filled with media that is designed to control erosion. Erosion control socks are available in varying widths ranging from 4” to 18” and lengths from 10’ to 200’ to suit nearly any application. When compared to silt fences or straw wattles, the erosion control filter sock by Filtrexx has been shown to remove more sediment, require an easier installation and require less long term maintenance. These erosion control socks can be used on slopes for erosion control but also in and around drain inlet areas, in front of curb inlets, and in receiving channels. Erosion control socks can be installed on top of the ground and trenching is not required. The socks can be installed in any type of weather and even in freezing temperatures.

Filtrexx erosion control socks are comparable with most state and federal regulations including NRCS, USDA and US Army Corps of Engineers.

Erosion Control Filter Socks: A Practical Guide

Erosion Control Filter Socks offer an effective and low-maintenance way to manage sediment and runoff on job sites. In this guide, we’ll break down what they are, where they work best, and how real contractors are using them to solve erosion problems faster and more efficiently.

What Are Erosion Control Filter Socks?

Erosion Control Filter Socks are a reliable, commercial-grade solution used to prevent soil erosion on construction sites, slopes, and areas with exposed soil. These tubular mesh socks are filled with organic or synthetic filter media that slows down water runoff and captures sediment.

Unlike silt fences or straw wattles, these socks require no trenching, offer superior sediment retention, and can be installed in all weather conditions, including freezing temperatures. Sizes range from 4" to 18" in diameter and 10' to 200' in length, making them adaptable to many types of applications.

Applications for Filter Socks

These socks are commonly used in a variety of situations:

  • Sloped areas: To slow water runoff and trap sediment before it leaves the site.
  • Drain inlets and curb areas: Positioned to prevent debris from entering storm drains.
  • Channel protection: Placed in receiving channels to reduce erosion and sediment movement.

Because they’re quick to deploy and don’t require digging, they're perfect for fast-paced jobs or cold-weather projects.

Case Study: Highway Construction in the Midwest

During a recent highway expansion project in the Midwest, a contractor faced consistent rainfall and freezing conditions that made traditional silt fence installation difficult. They turned to 12-inch Erosion Control Filter Socks from Filtrexx for a quicker, more durable solution.

The team deployed the socks along slope edges and storm drain inlets without any trenching. Over the 3-month rainy season, sediment runoff was significantly reduced, maintenance was minimal, and installation time was cut in half compared to silt fence methods.

The site inspector later noted that the socks had “exceeded sediment control expectations” and recommended their use in future phases of the project.
